Microsoft has released a new expansion pack for Windows 10 that adds a new compatibility layer to DirectX. It allows OpenCL and OpenGL apps to run on a Windows 10 PC that doesn't have OpenCL and OpenGL hardware drivers installed by default.

If a DirectX 12 driver is installed, supported apps will run with hardware acceleration for better performance. This package supports apps that use OpenCL version 1.2 and earlier and OpenGL version 3.3 and earlier.

Microsoft ships two versions of the pack. The public one is in the Store, and the other one is available for Windows Insiders. The latter supports more apps out of the box.

The pack provides a new D3D12 backend to the open-source Mesa project to support OpenCL and OpenGL. By building the OpenCL and OpenGL mapping layers, Microsoft will be able to provide hardware acceleration to a variety of apps with just a DX12 driver, no other driver required.

Only certain apps can use this compatibility pack. Windows Insiders can get an Insiders version of this package that allows more apps to use it.

The pack requires Windows 10 version 19041.488 or higher, Xbox One, DirectX 12, and available for the ARM, ARM64, x64, and x86 platforms.
