Microsoft officially confirmed that they will cut 10,000 employees by March 31

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella confirmed in a message to employees that by March 31, 2023, the company will lay off about 10 thousand people, which is approximately 5% of the total number of Microsoft employees.

In a letter, Satya Nadella stated the following:

First, we will align our cost structure with our revenue and where we see customer demand. Today, we are making changes that will result in the reduction of our overall workforce by 10,000 jobs through the end of FY23 Q3. This represents less than 5 percent of our total employee base, with some notifications happening today. It’s important to note that while we are eliminating roles in some areas, we will continue to hire in key strategic areas. We know this is a challenging time for each person impacted. The senior leadership team and I are committed that as we go through this process, we will do so in the most thoughtful and transparent way possible.

In the second quarter of fiscal year 2023, Microsoft will assume $1.2 billion in expenses related to severance payments, changes to the hardware mix, and rental consolidation costs. Note: The fiscal year starts on July 1 and ends on June 30.

Eligible U.S. employees will receive above-market severance pay, six months of uninterrupted medical care, six months of equity retention, career reassignment services, and will be given 60 days prior notice, regardless of whether such notice is required by law.
