Microsoft kills Windows 11 SE, Support Ends in 2026

Microsoft has announced the end of support for Windows 11 SE, a very special version of Windows launched in 2021 for budget education devices. The operating system was developed to compete with Chrome OS in the low-cost laptop segment.

Despite its positioning, Windows 11 SE runs on the full Windows 11 platform and lacks optimization for low-power hardware. The system imposes strict restrictions on multitasking and limits application usage to those authorized by administrators.

Support for Windows 11 SE will end in October 2026. At that time, the system will no longer receive security patches or new features. Version 24H2 for it will be the final major update. Future releases, including 25H2, will not include support for this edition.

Microsoft never managed to create a lightweight version of Windows that could match the performance of Chrome OS. The most advanced version, Windows 10X, was discontinued before it reached the market.
