Microsoft announces Windows 11 SE for low-cost education PCs

Microsoft has announced a new Windows 11 operating system called Windows 11 SE, which targets the educational market. Microsoft says that the OS is perfect for middle school students, as it is simple and intuitive.

Windows 11 SE

In Windows 11 SE, apps will open in full screen mode by default, although windowed mode is still supported. Snap Assist layouts remain as well, but they will only allow two apps to be placed side-by-side. The reason is most likely that Windows 11 SE devices will come with lower resolution screens.

Interestingly, this edition of Windows 11 will not include the Microsoft Store, which Microsoft has emphasized in previous attempts to create a competitor to Chrome OS. Also, it doesn't include the widget panel in the system either.

Windows 11 SE relies on cloud technologies. All users' files will be automatically saved to OneDrive by default. However, it also supports local storage, so you can access you files when offline.

Microsoft has made a number of performance improvements to make the OS run smoothly on devices with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Literally, the system is optimized to use Microsoft Edge, Office and other Microsoft services. Third party apps like Zoom and Chrome are also supported.

The first Windows 11 SE devices will go on sale later this year from major vendors, including Acer, Asus, Dell, Dynabook, Fujitsu, HP, JK-IP, Lenovo and Positivo.

The OS also includes a new variant of the Windows 11 desktop background. It is similar to the Bloom wallpaper that already comes in Windows 11, but comes in different colors. There are pink, yellow, purple, red, and blue lines.
