Microsoft is working on Windows 10 version 22H2

Looks like we will see a new version of Windows 10. References to a newer release have been discovered by enthusiasts in the latest cumulative patches. After tinkering with them the user ends up with Windows 10 version 22H2 installed on his computer.

Microsoft shares the version numbering scheme between the latest Windows 10 and Windows 11 releases. This way, we have Windows 10, version 21H2 for devices that fail to meet hardware requirements of Windows 11. But the initial release of Windows 11 is also version 21H2.

The successor of Windows 11 version 21H2 is the upcoming Windows 11 version 22H2 release. Now, we will also get Windows 10, version 22H2.

Microsoft today released a new optional update for Windows 10. Titled KB5014666, it increases the OS build number to 19044.1806 or 19043.1806.

But that's not all about this patch. It includes the switch to turn your Windows 10 to build 19045, version 22H2.

After installing the KB5014666 update for Windows 10 you can active version 22H2 with the following commands.

  1. Open a new command prompt as administrator.
  2. Type these commands, one by one.
      • dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%windir%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-Product-Data-22h2-EKB-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~10.0.19041.1806.mum
      • dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%windir%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-Product-Data-22h2-EKB-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~10.0.19041.1806.mum
      • dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%windir%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-Product-Data-22h2-EKB-Wrapper-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~10.0.19041.1806.mum
      • dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%windir%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-Product-Data-22h2-EKB-Wrapper-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~10.0.19041.1806.mum
      • dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%windir%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-UpdateTargeting-ClientOS-22h2-EKB-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~10.0.19041.1806.mum
      • dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%windir%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-UpdateTargeting-ClientOS-22h2-EKB-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~10.0.19041.1806.mum
      • dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%windir%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-UpdateTargeting-ClientOS-22h2-EKB-Wrapper-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~10.0.19041.1806.mum
      • dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%windir%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-UpdateTargeting-ClientOS-22h2-EKB-Wrapper-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~10.0.19041.1806.mum
  3. Restart your device.
  4. Voila, you now have Windows 10 version 22H2.

You can "uninstall" this Windows release by unregistering the updates in the OS.

For that, open the Command Prompt (or Terminal) as administrator, and execute the following commands.

  • dism /online /remove-package /packagepath:%windir%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-Product-Data-22h2-EKB-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~10.0.19041.1806.mum
  • dism /online /remove-package /packagepath:%windir%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-Product-Data-22h2-EKB-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~10.0.19041.1806.mum
  • dism /online /remove-package /packagepath:%windir%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-Product-Data-22h2-EKB-Wrapper-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~10.0.19041.1806.mum
  • dism /online /remove-package /packagepath:%windir%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-Product-Data-22h2-EKB-Wrapper-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~10.0.19041.1806.mum
  • dism /online /remove-package /packagepath:%windir%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-UpdateTargeting-ClientOS-22h2-EKB-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~10.0.19041.1806.mum

There is no list of changes available, so we don't know what exactly is included in KB5014666 and specially in version 22H2 of Windows 10. Microsoft is yet to announce its availability and release dates.

    no need to execute those dism.exe commands to get 22H2 for Win10 anymore
