Microsoft has ended support for the first-generation Surface Duo

Microsoft has officially ended support for the first-generation Surface Duo foldable smartphone, marking the conclusion of updates and security patches for the device. During its three-year lifespan, the Surface Duo received just two major operating system updates, which is notably fewer than what most flagship Android smartphones typically receive.

Back in 2020, Microsoft introduced the foldable Surface Duo smartphone with its innovative dual screens. In collaboration with Google, the company meticulously tailored Android to accommodate the unique display resolutions of the device. At its launch, Microsoft primarily targeted corporate users, tech enthusiasts, and individuals seeking the versatility of a dual-screen smartphone. Pricing started at $1,399 for the 128GB model and $1,499 for the 256GB variant, and it initially shipped with Android 10.

In 2021, Microsoft unveiled the Surface Duo 2 and initially pledged an OS update for the original generation. However, the update's release was delayed, eventually arriving in 2022. Another year later, Microsoft discontinued production of second-generation Surface Duo smartphones and opted not to provide an Android 13 update. The Surface Duo's OS development team transitioned to the Android Teams Room project, where their focus shifted to Android 12L.

While Surface Duo owners can continue using their devices without immediate restrictions, they should be aware that the smartphone will no longer receive protection against potential future Android vulnerabilities. However, installed apps will remain functional and receive updates as long as their OS version aligns with the app developer's support. Nevertheless, Microsoft has ceased actively developing new features and addressing bugs in the Surface Duo firmware for several months now. You can learn more on Microsoft.
