Microsoft, Google, Mozilla and Apple are improving their browser compliance with web standards

The major browser vendors are trying to make Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox render their pages in the same way, plus to improve modern web standards support. For that purpose, they introduce a new Interop 2022 benchmark.

The benchmark shows how Firefox, Chrome, Edge and Safari follow modern web standards. It test coverage involves 15 key areas, including cascade layers, color spaces, CSS color functions, viewport units, scrolling, form controls, and more.

Interop 2022 is not a competitive benchmark. Its primary goal to detect the areas where the specific browser fails to follow web standards and requires the web developer to use a workaround to unify the experience across the browsers.

Surprisingly, Firefox scores best with 69 points, while Chromium-based browsers are behind with 61 points. The world's most popular Chrome browser (~65% of the market) is on the second place.

The project gives alternative browsers a chance to close the gap between them and Chrome and reduce the compatibility issues that exist in modern browsers.

In addition to major browser makers, Bocoup and Igalia are participating in the project. It all started back in 2019 to understand developers' pain points. It has finally become Interop 2022 and assumes a lot of work in the future.
