Microsoft discontinues Internet Games in XP/Vista/Windows 7, turns off servers

Microsoft has revealed that the company discontinues their classic Internet games which were first introduced in Windows Millennium Edition. The servers behind the set of games will become unavailable very soon.

Here is the list of affected games and services.

  • Internet Backgammon (Windows XP / Windows ME / Windows 7)
  • Internet Checkers (Windows XP / Windows ME / Windows 7)
  • Internet Spades (Windows XP / Windows ME / Windows 7)
  • Internet Hearts (Windows XP / Windows ME)
  • Internet Reversi (Windows XP / Windows ME)
  • MSN Go (Windows 7)

Windows XP and ME game server shutdown date is July 31st, 2019. Servers for Windows 7 games will be turned off on January 22, 2020.

It looks like Microsoft does not consider the existing user base of these games to be a large enough to justify continued server support.

Microsoft notes that users will be able to play these games until the server shutdown date. The official announcement says the following.

We truly appreciate all the time and passion you’ve put into Microsoft Internet Games. This has been a great community.” Microsoft said. “However, the time has come for us, along with our hardware and software partners, to invest our resources towards more recent technologies so that we can continue to deliver great new experiences.

It is worth mentioning that Microsoft has already removed the classic games starting in Windows 8. Their have a modern alternative in form of a store app which exists for Windows 10 and Windows 8.
