Microsoft 365 Copilot will soon be able to run AI models locally

Microsoft has announced that Microsoft 365 Copilot will soon be able to use the NPU on Copilot+ devices to run AI models locally. This innovation will be highly beneficial, allowing users to work with AI without needing an active Internet connection. For instance, Copilot will be able to assist with writing documents in Word and Outlook even when offline.

In its press materials, Microsoft emphasizes the potential of Copilot+ PCs and says it is just beginning to unveil the new capabilities of Microsoft 365 Copilot on Copilot+ PCs. It makes sense that the company would want to turn the situation into a positive one, since the launch of Copilot+ PCs was not smooth.

Windows Recall

Microsoft didn't share much about the Windows Recall feature for quite some time. The company once again stated that it is working on improving security. Windows Recall will be disabled by default. In organizations, users will be able to use the feature only if the IT administrator enables it in policies. Microsoft is also introducing additional data encryption and authentication via Windows Hello.

No dates have yet been announced for the start of public testing.

Windows Copilot Runtime (WCR)

Developers will soon have new tools to use hardware resources like the NPU in their own AI apps. New imaging APIs will be available in January 2025 as part of the Windows Copilot Runtime in Windows App SDK 1.7 Experimental 2.

  • Resolution Enhancement: The API increases the resolution and clarity of images, which is especially useful for working with blurry images.
  • Segmentation: The API separates an image into foreground and background, allowing objects or regions to be removed. This makes it easier to implement features like background removal in image and video editing apps.
  • Removing objects. The API allows you to erase unnecessary objects from an image, harmoniously fitting the freed area into the background.
  • Image Description: The API generates a text description of the image.

Windows Copilot Runtime is already used in a number of applications, including Adobe Premiere Pro and Affinity Photo.
