How to make the taskbar auto hide in Tablet Mode of Windows 10

Tablet Mode is a special touch screen oriented mode in Windows 10. When enabled, it changes the behavior of the Start menu and turns it into a full-screen Start experience. Universal apps also open full screen and desktop apps open maximized in Tablet Mode. With Windows 10 Anniversary Update, Microsoft has added the ability to auto hide the taskbar in Tablet mode. Here is how to enable this useful feature.

Starting with the recently released Windows 10 build 14328, it is possible to make the taskbar auto hide when in Tablet Mode. This can be done by turning on the appropriate option in the Settings app. The procedure is almost similar to what you have to do to automatically hide the taskbar in regular Desktop mode.

Note: when the taskbar is hidden, swipe from the bottom corner of the screen to the middle of the screen to make it appear. the same gesture will make it disappear.

To Make Taskbar Auto Hide in Tablet Mode in Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to the System > Tablet page.
  3. On the right, click on the link Change additional tablet settings.
  4. On the next page, turn on the option Automatically hide the taskbar in tablet mode.
  5. You have enabled the taskbar auto-hiding in the tablet mode.

The same can done on the Personalization page of Settings.

Make Taskbar Auto Hide in Personalization settings

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to the Personalization > Taskbar.
  3. On the right, enable the Automatically hide the taskbar in tablet mode toggle option.

You are done!

Alternatively, you can apply a Registry tweak. This can be done as follows.

Using a Registry Tweak

  1. Open Registry Editor.
  2. Go to the following Registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced. You can access the desired Registry key with one click.
  3. If you don't have such a key, then just create it.
  4. On the right side, create a new 32-bit DWORD value named TaskbarAutoHideInTabletMode. Note that even if you are running 64-bit Windows, you still need to create a 32-bit DWORD value.
  5. Set its value data to 1 to enable taskbar auto hiding.
  6. A value data of 0 will disable taskbar auto hiding.
  7. To apply changes made by editing the Registry, you will need to sign out from your Windows 10 account and the sign in back.

  1. I’ll never understand why would anyone want to do this. If I could, I’d disable auto-hiding of navigation bar in some apps on WP too.
