Let's Encrypt has issued a warning that starting from February 8, 2024, certificates will no longer work on Android 7 and older versions of the mobile operating system. This change is a result of the expiration of cross-signed intermediate certificates and the end of the partnership between Let's Encrypt and IdenTrust.
By the fall of 2021, Let's Encrypt implemented a new cross-signing mechanism that extended the trust of older Android devices in the company's certificates. This extension was designed to last for an additional three years, but it is set to expire on September 30, 2024.
As the percentage of Android devices trusting ISRG Root X1 has significantly increased from 66% to 93.9%, Let's Encrypt will be dropping cross-signatures between February 8 and September 30, 2024, leading to potential issues for owners of Android 7 and older devices.
To access sites secured with Let's Encrypt certificates, Let's Encrypt recommends installing and using Firefox Mobile, which uses its own trust store.
