HP disables printing access for printers until users install the HP Smart app in addition to drivers. Earlier this month, a HP LaserJet M110w printer user reported that the manufacturer of office equipment had seemingly disabled the printer's printing capability without providing a clear reason.
The user found that in order to restore printing functionality, they had to install the HP Smart application alongside the necessary drivers. According to the photo from the printer test sheet, HP asks the user to finish installing the device using the HP Smart app, and then turn off the printer for a few minutes and turn it back on again for proper activation on their system.
According to the printer's maker company, the HP Smart app is the primary software for managing the printer, complete with all necessary drivers for printing and scanning. HP states that users can easily print, scan, copy, and fax directly from the home screen of the app, while also being able to monitor printer status, troubleshoot issues, order supplies, and adjust settings.
The HP Smart app is the recommended printing solution, offering a range of standard and additional functions and settings that can vary based on the specific printer model and geographical location.
Most users are unhappy with this move. Some people think that the Smart app is bloatware. It is not really required for printing, as the printer works fine with only the drivers installed. The new requirement is software locking.
