Google will soon end support for its services on Android KitKat

Starting August 2023, Google will no longer release updates for the Android KitKat platform. Devices will no longer receive Play Services APKs after version 23.30.99.

The KitKat platform was released a decade ago and lacks many improvements and features available in newer versions of Android.

Android Kitkat

As of July 2023, less than 1% of active devices are on the KitKat platform as users update to the latest versions. However in April, Google announced that developers can use the Photo Picker library in apps for Android 4.4 KitKat and later. It allows you to quickly implement an image selection mechanism for further use within the application.

Some users consider KitKat as it was the last good version of Android. After it, the OS, while improving, started to get usability and performance regressions. These days, it is unlikely that someone updates Play Services on such old devices. Updating Play Services on older devices can significantly slow them down, making them nearly unusable.
