Users were able to obtain and play the game using leaked code shared on Twitter. However, the archive was missing certain content and assets. But it was easy to obtain those from the official copy of the shooter. The source of the Far Cry and CryEngine leaks remains unknown. Ubisoft, the current franchise owner, has not yet provided any comments on the situation.

CryEngine

Far Cry was a significant milestone for Crytek, as it marked their first commercial game developed on their proprietary CryEngine. Prior to Far Cry, Crytek had been working on a demo called X-Isle: Dinosaur Island, which showcased the capabilities of their engine. The demo later became a benchmark for NVIDIA GeForce video cards in the 2000s.

Following the success of Far Cry, Ubisoft became interested in Crytek. The company acquired the rights to the game as well as the CryEngine. The latter evolved into Dunia.  Finally, Crytek went on to develop the acclaimed Crysis shooter in collaboration with Electronic Arts.
