Microsoft Edge gets smart text predictions

Microsoft announced a new intelligent feature coming soon to the Edge browser. Edge users in the Canary and Dev channels can now test the new "Text Prediction" capability. It will work in conjunction with the Microsoft Editor integration (announced in 2021) and let users type faster.

Intelligent text prediction is not a new concept. It is available in popular services, such as Gmail and Office Word. The feature analyzes what you type and tries to predict what you might want to say next. Text predictions appear grayed-out after the text cursor. If the prediction is correct, you can enter it by pressing the Tab or "Right Arrow" button on the keyboard.

Edge Text Predictions

Text prediction is currently available to a limited set of Edge Insiders. Users can access the feature in the latest builds of the Edge browser from Canary and Dev channels. More importantly, it works only in the US and requires setting English as the primary language.

Microsoft says developers plan to expand the support to more languages in more markets later. Meanwhile, English-speaking users can test text predictions in Microsoft Edge Dev and Canary.

Smart text prediction is not the only feature Microsoft prepares for future Edge updates. The software giant is working on improved vertical tabs with an option to move pages to the right. Also, Edge Insiders can test a new sidebar with several popular tools, such as Office Online, Internet speed test, Microsoft Rewards, and website insights.

With major updates coming out every four weeks, Microsoft Edge quickly approaches version 100. To ensure a shift from two to three-digit version numbers will not break the Internet, Microsoft is testing a new Edge 100 user-agent string. You can participate in the trials and share feedback with Microsoft.
