Microsoft is testing new simplified context menus for Edge browser. Currently, it is available as part of A/B testing in Edge Canary 90. The menu appears when you select some text in a PDF document.
The menu is enabled by default and looks as follows.
You can manually disable or enable it to keep only the necessary actions, such as highlight text, add a comment, or copy the selected text. There is also a button to open a full menu with all the available buttons and commands in case you need them. This simplified menu will help you to focus on the most important parts of PDF viewer without distraction from unnecessary buttons.
There is no information on whether other parts of Microsoft Edge will receive simplified menus, but such an update would be a nice addition, considering how complicated modern browsers are and how many different features they offer.
Unfortunately, this new simplified menu for PDF in Edge is not available for everyone and there is no dedicated flag to enable it manually. It is available for a limited number of insiders in the Canary channel, part of the Controlled Feature Roll-out. You can check whether your browser received this feature by opening Settings – Appearance. There should be a dedicated Context menu with an option to enable a mini menu in PDF viewer.
The controlled rollout means this feature may be gone at some point and not make it to the stable version at all. Usually, Microsoft practices this type of testing when developers want to receive more feedback from users and make sure a new feature works well before shipping it to a wider audience.
Recently, Microsoft introduced a new feature roadmap for Edge with all the upcoming features descriptions and approximate release dates. Currently, new mini menus are not listed but you can check other interesting updates there.
