The Discord platform has announced that it will stop supporting its client for running on 32-bit Windows operating systems on December 1, 2023. Users need to update their systems to a 64-bit version of the OS.
Discord is a popular communication platform that allows users to chat, voice call, and video call with others. It was initially created for gamers to communicate while playing games, but it has gained popularity among various communities for its versatile features. Discord provides text channels for public or private group discussions, voice channels for real-time voice conversations, and video channels for face-to-face communication. It also offers additional features like file sharing, screen sharing, and integration with other applications.
According to a support message, Discord's "basic functionality" will still be available on 32-bit Windows after December 1. However, its continued functionality and stability are not guaranteed as it will no longer receive updates. Users with older computers running 32-bit Windows can still use Discord through web browsers if the browser meets the service's minimum requirements.
Microsoft also announced in May 2020 that it would no longer offer 32-bit Windows operating systems to PC OEMs. Since then, these companies have shipped PCs with a pre-installed 64-bit version of Windows. Many other applications and games have also dropped support for the 32-bit version. Discord's decision to end support for 32-bit versions just follows the trend.
Last month, Microsoft added support for streaming game videos to Discord channels in an Xbox feature update. The platform has hinted at additional features in the works for Xbox console gamers.
