Copilot in Microsoft Edge may fail create a summary for specific videos

Recently, Microsoft Edge browser has received a new Copilot-based feature that allows you to generate text summaries for videos. However, at the moment, it only works with pre-processed videos or subtitles, as reported by the head of Microsoft's advertising and web services division, Mikhail Parakhin.

According to him, in order for the feature to work in Copilot, the video needs to be pre-processed. If the video has subtitles, Copilot will rely on them, but if they don’t exist and the video isn't processed yet, you won't get a text summary.

Copilot Text Transcription For A Video

In other words, Edge Copilot currently only summarizes text transcripts of videos. Copilot performs a similar work in Microsoft 365, including summarizing video meetings in Teams. Summarizing video conferences in Microsoft Teams using Copilot requires that the audio recording be transcribed and converted into text. Copilot in Microsoft Stream is capable of summarizing any video, but only after creating a written transcript.

Many platforms, such as YouTube and Vimeo, can automatically generate subtitles for videos if the creator enables such a feature. This means that for most public videos, Copilot will not require additional processing.
