Android users can now set Microsoft Copilot as their default assistant instead of the one from Google. This follows the suit of the ChatGPT app, which was previously spotted as having the same capabilities.
But it is still a work in progress, so Microsoft is testing the new option among Copilot Beta users.
Set Copilot as default Android assistant
The change will allow moving away from Google's ecosystem a bit farther. Copilot will be available from any screen on Android with a gesture or voice command.
You will find the new option in the Copilot beta app for Android version 27.9.420225014. If you are on the beta channel, install the latest app available in the Play Store, then open Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app, and select Copilot to activate it.
However, it currently has issues. For example, if you try to open the chatbot, you will end up with the main app UI. So you can tap the microphone button as an extra step. There are other rough surfaces there and there, including the inability to capture the screen with Copilot.
