How to Change Touchpad Sensitivity in Windows 10

If you have a laptop with a touchpad (trackpad) and you upgraded to Windows 10, or your device comes with Windows 10 pre-installed, you might want to adjust its sensitivity. Here are two methods you can use.

The touchpad is a pointing device which usually comes integrated with your laptop case. It works like a mouse replacement. When no mouse is connected to the device, it does its job well.

Starting with Creators Update version 1703, Windows 10 allows you to configure multi-finger gestures for Precision Touchpads. If you are the lucky owner of a device with such a touchpad, you can configure multi-touch gestures for it.

If you find yourself having to press on the touchpad too much, increasing its sensitivity should resolve the issue. Also, if it is too responsive so you do accidental clicks, then you need to decrease its sensitivity.

To Change Touchpad Sensitivity in Windows 10,

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Devices - Touchpad.
  3. Under Touchpad sensitivity, select Most sensitive, High sensitivity, Medium sensitivity, or Low sensitivity. Try the new value and see what works best for you.
  4. Medium sensitivity is the default value.

Alternatively, you can apply a Registry tweak. Here's how.

Change Touchpad Sensitivity in Registry

  1. Open the Registry Editor app.
  2. Go to the following Registry key.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PrecisionTouchPad
    See how to go to a Registry key with one click.
  3. On the right, modify or create a new 32-Bit DWORD value AAPThreshold.
    Note: Even if you are running 64-bit Windows you must still create a 32-bit DWORD value.
  4. Set its value data to:
    • 0 == Most sensitive
    • 1 == High sensitivity
    • 2 == Medium sensitivity (default)
    • 3 == Low sensitivity
  5. To make the changes done by the Registry tweak take effect, you need to sign out and sign in to your user account.

You are done!

Also, please keep in mind that the drivers available for your touchpad device may include their open setup utility that allows adjusting many of the touchpad parameters, including its sensitivity. Vendors like Elan, Synaptics, and others include a special tool which can be found in the classic Control Panel and/or in the Mouse Properties dialog. Check them out.

That's it.

  1. I’m sorry, but you have the values of AAPThreshold conflated with Windows 10 Touchpad Sensitivity settings. The two have nothing directly to do with each other, though both seek to help with the problem of inadvertent touchpad taps.

    The values of AAPThreshold correspond to delays before touchpad can be used after typing. That’s what the web page says. It needs further explanation. But taking the page literally, to eliminate inadvertent touchpad taps, which send the cursor away from where you are typing, AAPThreshold must be set to 0, not 3, as shown in the Windows 8.1 black screen and the table of AAPThreshold values.
