Skype 1.17 for Linux Alpha is out

Microsoft today released Skype for Linux Alpha version 1.17. It is a new application which has nothing common with the previously available Skype 4.3. The change log for version 1.17 comes with a number of interesting changes. Let's see what has changed.

Here is what's new in Skype 1.17 Alpha for Linux.

  • Application zoom level setting is persisted
  • Backslash (\) doesn't trigger Skype chat commands anymore
  • Formatting of pasted text is preserved (whitespaces and linebreaks are no longer removed)
  • Improvements for sending code snippets. You can now send !! or {code} macros. Still working on support for sending XML snippets.

To try out the Skype app right now, do the following.

  1. Point your browser here: Skype for Linux Alpha
  2. Download and install the appropriate package. Skype installing
  3. Open the apps menu and run it from there. Skype installed
