Desktop App Converter receives support for auto-signing and more

Microsoft's Desktop App Converter tool allows developers to easily convert their .NET and Win32 applications to sandboxed .appx packages and distribute them via the Windows Store. The tool was first released in an unfinished state during the development cycle of Windows 10 Anniversary Update. It has been a success in the Windows developer community. A recent tool update, now available in the Windows Store, has added even more useful features for its users.

If you're a developer, you will now be able to set all your converted apps to be automatically signed during the conversion process. Desktop App Converter will also extract icons and create all the needed assets for your app.

The full official change log includes these changes:

  • Icon Extraction – DAC now automatically uses icons in your app installer to generate visual assets used when your converted app is deployed.
  • With the store app you can now use the new entry point ‘DesktopAppConverter.exe <arguments>’ to run the converter from anywhere in an admin cmd or PowerShell window
  • Support for auto-signing the converted apps produced by the Desktop App Converter.
  • Support for auto-detecting app dependencies on VC++ libraries and then converting them into AppX manifest dependencies.

You can download or update the Desktop App Converter tool from the Windows Store.

  1. Unfortunately, the icon extraction doesn’t seem to work very well. My icons use high-color alpha images with soft shadows. When running the APPX, my images look jagged.
