Like previous versions of Windows, Windows 10 is able to detect Internet availability. When the Internet does not work, a yellow warning icon appears over the network icon in the taskbar. If you use a proxy server or connection filtering, it might be very annoying to see that overlay. Here is how to disable it.
- Open Registry Editor.
- Go to the following Registry key:
Tip: How to jump to the desired registry key with one click.
If you do not have such a Registry key, then just create it.
- In the right pane, create a new DWORD value named NC_DoNotShowLocalOnlyIcon. Set it to 1.
- Close Registry Editor and restart the Explorer shell. In some cases, you might need to restart Windows.
The yellow overlay will disappear.
That's it. This trick also works in Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.
Update: This Registry tweak doesn't work in Windows 10 Anniversary Update and above.
