A consumer version of Microsoft Defender is out for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android

Microsoft has released a new cross-platform Microsoft Defender app for consumers. On Windows, it acts as an additional dashboard for the built-in anti-virus, while on other platforms it includes the Defender engine.

As you may already know, Microsoft Defender is part of the Microsoft 365 platform. Starting today, Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers can install it on Windows, macOS, iOS, or Android devices.

On each of the supported Defender works in an unique way. For example, the iOS and iPadOS version does not include antivirus protection, but offers users protection against web phishing. The Android version comes with a built-in antivirus. It can scan the system for malicious apps, and check links to protect against phishing attacks.

Finally, on Windows it works like an extra dashboard, but  doesn't replace  the default Windows Security app. It can show data from third-party antiviruses.

Microsoft Defender will allow you to manage protection options on your other devices that run it. Obviously, it uses your Microsoft account for that and supports up to 5 devices.

Microsoft Defender may be useful to users who want to protect multiple devices at once. It will show security notifications and tips for improving security and protection for each of the devices.

Microsoft promises that more options will come to the app in the future. The Microsoft 365 license now includes Defender and all its protection features.
