20H2 Will Be Windows 10 Version 2009, a Minor Update for 20H1

A cumulative update released for Windows 10 version 2004, '20H1', also known as 'May 2020 Update', reveals a new information regarding Windows 10 '20H2'. It confirms rumors that 20H2 will be a minor, service pack-like update. It will follow the idea that Microsoft has implemented for Windows 10 version 1909, which is a minor update to version 1903.The latest cumulative update for Windows 10 Version 2004, build 19041.264, contains early hints on how the 20H2 update will work. If a package called Microsoft-Windows-20H2Enablement is present while installing that patch, you will end up with Windows 10 version 2009, Build 19042, after updating the OS.  KB4556803 is applicable to both Windows 10 2004 (19041) and Windows 10 2009 (19042).

Windows 10 version 1909 works similarly, allowing Microsoft to share the code for both 1903 and 1909 releases, and separating their features via an 'enabler' package.

So, now we know that 20H2 is a minor update with a smaller set of enhancements focused primarily on select performance improvements, enterprise features, and quality enhancements. It is now known as Windows 10 version 2009, but Microsoft may change its marketing name and version in the future.

In September or October 2020 Microsoft will release a switcher patch to convert 20H1 installations into 20H2.

It is interesting that officially Microsoft keeps silence regarding the fact that 20H2 will be a minor, small update. Also, earlier the company claimed that they are not going to release more 19H2-like patches. It looks like the situation has changed.

  1. 20H1 already seems very minor, so I guess 20H2 will have no visible changes whatsoever. I was really hoping for that redesigned Start Menu with removed icon square backgrounds.

    1. Usually, major feature updates (like a revamped Start menu) will happen with a spring release (e.g., 1903, 2004, 2103, etc); the fall releases (1909, 2009, 2109, etc) are more stability releases. Consequently, Spring releases are only supported by Microsoft for 18 months, while Fall releases are supported 36 months. This is why most enterprises usually skip the Spring release in favor of the Fall release – you can update 1/3rd of your PCs each year and still stay supported.

While the Insider Preview builds might contain new features, often those new features get pulled during Release Preview builds that go out to the Slow Ring, especially if it’s more of a Feature Update type of feature.

  2. Thanks Sergey for the update. I will take one thing at a time, will get over with 20H1 first whenever it happens. Really strange for a minor update of 20H1 to have a version jump from 2004 to 2009.
