YouTube is cancelling Premium obtained for a lower price via VPN

YouTube users have seen their Premium subscriptions cancelled, as the platform is combating the practice of purchasing a subscription through a VPN at a lower price than the one in the user’s region. YouTube offers different Premium plans for specific markets, and in some cases the subscription price may vary by several times.

Some users have come up with a workaround: Subscribe via VPN in a more “affordable” region. For example, Turkey, India, and Argentina have a lower price for the YouTube subscription. YouTube officially says that the service requires VPN users to update their payment information. However, some users already faced their "cheaper" Premium cancelled without a notification.

ℹ️ VPNs are typically used to protect user privacy and prevent cyber attacks, but these tools are also capable of hiding a user's IP address. Additionally, VPNs can display a specific country of origin, allowing users to pretend to be from another country in front of YouTube.

To provide the most accurate rates and offers, YouTube uses several tricks to determine the user's country. When the country of registration does not match the locations from which the user accesses YouTube, the user will be asked to update the payment information in accordance with the current state of residence.

In addition, a Google support representative revealed that YouTube has also started canceling Premium subscriptions for accounts that provided false country information during registration. The employee mentioned that this new crackdown on violators began recently, with affected users being notified via email and within the YouTube app that their premium subscriptions will be terminated.
