Users have noticed that Microsoft's Copilot AI assistant app ignores the policies to turn it off and even starts when it is not needed.
"I enable Copilot for specific windows because not all of my repos are publicly accessible. Some are owned by clients I work for who have not given me consent for sharing code with third parties. Today, Copilot enabled itself for all my open VS Code windows without my consent. I have agent mode enabled in Copilot, so now you may or may not have a copy of all files containing keys, YAML secrets, certificates. This is not normal," said @Rektbuildr on GitHub.
Previously, another user reported a similar Windows Copilot error where the app re-enabled itself on the PC after being disabled via a GPO setting.
Industry experts have suggested that this behavior of the Copilot AI assistant app may be the result of a change in the way Microsoft implements Copilot in Windows 11.
So, the Group Policy that disables the app no longer works for the new version of the Copilot app. Depending on your Windows 11 version, you now need to remove Copilot from the OS using PowerShell, as explained in the article "Uninstall or prevent installation of the Copilot app.
In early March 2025, Microsoft banned its free AI assistant Copilot from issuing MAS (Microsoft Activation Scripts) scripts from a GitHub repository for free and quick activation of Windows 7-11 and Office applications.
