Windows 11 Version 24H2 Appears in the Official Documentation

A recent discovery on Microsoft's official support page suggests that the next major update to Windows 11 may be referred to as Windows 11 version 24H2. It it one more confirmation that it won't be a brand new Windows 12 release. The mention of this new version was found on a deeply buried page on the Microsoft website dedicated to changes to the EnumDeviceDrivers function. It is related to the Process Status API (PSAPI). The page was last updated on January 29, 2024.

The development of Windows 11 version 24H2, also known by its code name Hudson Valley, is focused on integrating advanced artificial intelligence capabilities into the operating system. This integration aims to provide seamless and enhanced AI functionality, requiring new processors equipped with NPUs (neural processing units) to accelerate AI computations.

Currently, the Windows family of operating systems is in use on 1.4 billion devices, with 400 million running Windows 11. However, approximately one billion users continue to rely on Windows 10, primarily due to the inability to meet the new system requirements for upgrading to Windows 11. Windows 10 had a 66.74% market share in January 2024, while Windows 11 is still far behind at 27.84%.

Given Microsoft's desire to avoid further fragmentation of its user base, it is highly likely that the release of a product named "Windows 12" will be postponed indefinitely. Windows 10 may become just another Windows 7 (or Windows XP if you want) that will remain on the market for quite long. Microsoft is now paying more attention to Windows 10 by bringing up  Windows 11 features to it, including new Copilot Assistant and a new weather widget on the lock screen. Its Insider Beta Channel is also receiving more updates and builds to test.
