Microsoft appears to be working on adding a tabbed interface to the Notepad app for Windows 11. A leaked screenshot that proves that has been posted by a company employee. The original tweet has been quickly deleted, but here's the original image.
As you can see, the tab bar appears at the top. It is unlikely that Microsoft will allow changing its location. Perhaps the tab position will be hardcoded as in case of File Explorer
So, Notepad with tabs will allow the user to open multiple *.txt files in the same window. It looks like that the work is at early stage. There is a warning in the UI that says "Do not discuss features or take screenshots," which is typical for alpha versions.
We expect Microsoft to announce this new version of Notepad next year. Obviously, it will first land in Insider channels.
The final polished version of Notepad may become part of the "Moments" updates, most likely it will be Moment 3.
The addition of tabs is a welcome feature for many users. It is needed a useful way to handle multiple files. It could be great to see support for "sessions", so Notepad could restore sets of tabs, or even restore the last tabs opened when you last time closed it. But honestly I doubt that we will see anything like that.
