Windows 10 version 20H2 now displays Edge promotional pop-ups

Edge Taskbar Ad Icon

In addition to ads that Microsoft runs on its services including Outlook, as well as in the Start menu and Windows Search, a new type of promotional recommendations has been spotted by Windows version 20H2 users. A pop-up appears above the pinned Edge icon in the taskbar, and it tries to draw your attention to the app.

First spotted by Windows Latest, the popups , may appear even when you have the Edge app running in the background. This is a bit weird, as the user is already aware of the browser. The source made a conclusion that it is just a bug in Windows 10 version 20H2, October 2020 Update. Here is how it looks.

If your device is affected by this unexpected behavior, you can easily get rid of such notifications. Just click on the pinned Edge icon, and notification will disappear. Also, you can turn off tips and suggestions option in Settings > System > Notifications & Actions.

According to unnamed sources close to Microsoft, the company is now looking into this unexpected behavior, and they might pause the campaign soon. Users are not expected to see such ads when they are already using the browser. It looks like something in the OS is preventing it from detecting the running browser.

  1. Either way, it’s annoying as heck!
MS is way too much ‘in your face’ lately!
And, they make it sound like pinning a browser to your Taskbar is the latest thing since sliced bread!!! Sheesh!!!
