Windows 10 updates will now be of much smaller size

Microsoft has backported to Windows 10 one of the greatest optimizations earlier made to Windows 11: Small update size. To save your network bandwidth, Microsoft is following in the footsteps of Windows 11 by decreasing the size of Windows 10 update packages.

Windows 10 updates will now be smaller

Currently, the change is being tested with a preview update (optional update) released on April 23. KB5028244 is the first patch to introduce "efficient packaging" that doesn't include anything not related to the update process, like reverse differentials.

The similar optimization has been done earlier for Windows 11.

For versioned data systems requiring forward and reverse delta pairs, “reverse update data generation” provides a way of efficiently distributing the forward delta to the machine and having the machine maintain a path back to its original state. Microsoft has successfully employed this approach in Windows 11, providing a 40% reduction in update size. This benefits our customer base who will need to download less to remain up-to-date and secure.

Windows 10 22H2 is the first and the only Windows 10 version to receive this optimization. Due to the change, an average patch size will be reduced from approximately 850 MB to approximately 650 MB.

The official announcement is here.

  1. Small updates are a good thing. Lets hope they are reduced back to one per month, because two per month is just too much. I am sick to death of updates, I have better things to do with my time !!! –
