Windows 10 Updates Will Be Free Until October 2026, But There’s a Catch

Microsoft has announced free updates for Windows 10 users for one year, part of the Extended Support Updates (ESU) program. The updates will be available until October 2026, but under one condition: The user must set up synchronization of system settings with their Microsoft account with the Windows Backup application.

As a reminder, extended support for Windows 10 will end on October 14, 2025. Users who are unable or have no desire to upgrade to Windows 11 can sign up for a paid subscription. They then will receive security updates via the Extended Support Updates (ESU) program. The subscription costs $30 per year for each device for regular users. Alternatively, you can sign up for a subscription for 1,000 Microsoft Reward points.

You can register your device for the Extended Support Updates (ESU) program in a special app that Microsoft will provide to Windows 10 users in July 2025 (see the screenshot in the middle of this post).

It is important to note that Extended Support Updates (ESU) will not include new features, bug fixes, or technical support for the product.
