As you may already know, Microsoft has cancelled Windows 10 S as a separate edition. Instead, there will be 'S mode', which can be enabled for any edition. When in S mode, Windows 10 will be restricted to running apps downloaded from the Store only. A new official announcement reveals that Windows 10 in S Mode will become available this Spring. Also, upgrades to full Windows versions will be free.

Joe Belfiore of Microsoft today explained that S mode will exist in all Windows 10 editions. It will guarantee a "low hassle/performance" version of Windows 10, targeted at schools and businesses.

So, it will be possible to buy a new PC with Windows 10 Home or Pro with S Mode enabled. Also, it will be possible to deploy Windows 10 Enterprise in S Mode.

The operating system running in this mode can be upgraded to full Windows 10 for free, regardless of the installed edition.

Microsoft considers Windows 10 in S Mode suitable for "the majority of customers".  Belfiore said that it's planning on partners offering many devices with S Mode installed.

Windows 10 in S Mode is Microsoft's response to Google's Chromebooks. It has a number of restrictions which can make devices with the OS running in this mode less attractive for potential buyers. For example, Windows 10 in S Mode will only run apps from the Windows Store. Microsoft says this change allows it to greatly improve and enhance the security of the OS. Win32 apps converted using Project Centennial (Desktop app converter tool) may run on Windows 10 S though. But it is not possible to download, install or run programs from outside of the Windows Store. The Hyper-V feature is not available in S Mode too.

The good thing is that if you buy a PC in S Mode, you can instantly switch it to a full Windows version for free.

It would be nice if Windows ‘S’ucks mode completely failed.

  2. When will the people at Microsoft stop daydreaming and finally realize without Win32 then Windows will be replaced?
Microsoft is the first company considered their biggest advantage as a treat and trying their best destroy it!

  3. I hope there is way around windows 10 s mode, meaning its enable by microsoft and it can be tweaked or deleted by the home user. Since when does Microsoft dictate what applications we can and cannot use?
