New information has become available about the upcoming feature update for Windows 10. Currently known as Redstone 5, it seems it will be officially called Windows 10 October 2018 Update, version 1809.

Microsoft today revealed that the name "Windows 10 October 2018 Update" will be officially used for the next major release, which is also known as Redstone 5, version 1809. The naming scheme just identifies the month and year in which the feature update is being released.

An article on the official Windows blog exposing new devices that were introduced during IFA 2018 in Berlin comes with the following statement.

I’m pleased to announce that our next feature update to Windows will be called the Windows 10 October 2018 Update

...

The Windows 10 October 2018 Update will launch as version 1809, and I'm hearing from my sources that Microsoft is planning to internally sign-off on this release on September 25, with plans to begin rolling it out to the public in the first half of October. Assuming all goes according to plan, Microsoft will compile the build it intends to rollout to the public on September 14, and will test that with Insiders before signing off on the 25.

Windows 10 version 1809 will give the user tons of minor improvements along with interesting new features, such as Cloud Clipboard, a new dark theme for File Explorer, the Screen Sketch app to take screenshots, and the new snipping experience, a new version of the classic Notepad app, the Your Phone app that allows sending and receiving SMS, calls, and the ability to manage your phone's gallery on iOS and Android, and many more.

Unfortunately, the most awaited feature, 'Sets', is postponed. It is not known when it will be released to the production stream.

Windows Insiders should get the final build of Windows 10 "October 2018 Update" in September. As is evident from the marketing name, the public rollout will be started in October 2018.

  1. Excitement for Microsoft’s OS is gone for a long time now. The excitement of getting a stable OS is back, unfortunatelly it was not experienced for a long time.
