On September 24, 2024, Llama Group open-sourced Winamp and moved the project to a collaborative development model. The project's source code is written in C++ and C and published under the free copyleft Winamp Collaborative License (WCL) Version 1.0.

The project developers explained that the Winamp desktop client build is currently based on Visual Studio 2019 (VS2019) and Intel IPP libraries (you need to use v6.1.1.035).
Earlier, Llama Group announced the decision to open the source code of Winamp from September 24, 2024 and move the project to a collaborative development model with the Open Source community, so that anyone can take part in the continued creation of new versions of the media player.
The Winamp project was created by Justin Frankel and Dmitry Boldyrev in 1997. This development is one of the longest-lived multimedia players, continuing active development. Winamp was initially oriented to use on the Windows platform and has more than 80 million users. Due to its originality and flexibility in the field of changing the interface design through skins, several open clones for Linux were created under the impression of Winamp, such as XMMS1/2, Beep Media Player and its fork Audacious, and finally Qmmp. Those support Winamp v2 skin format natively. The latter is my favorite player app. Finally, VLC has a Winamp classic skin for some reason.
