Updated official Windows 11 virtual machines available for download

Microsoft has released an updated version of Windows 11 machines. The company predominantly targets them for developers, but anyone else can play with them. Instead of installing the latest OS on a virtual machine yourself, you can download the ready-use image that also includes a set of developer tools. The VM image is built on an Enterprise SKU, and allows the developer to build a variety of different apps using the preinstalled software.

It includes Windows 11 22H2 Enterprise Evaluation with Developer Mode enabled by default, Visual Studio 2022 Community Edition with UWP, .NET Desktop, Azure, Windows App SDK for C#, Ubuntu on WSL 2, and Windows Terminal.

These Windows 11-based virtual machines are not "completely free." You can use the software without limits until January 10, 2023. After that date you will be asked to obtain a full license, since the operating system is available for evaluation only.

The Windows 11 virtual machine from Microsoft is available for download on the official website. You can download the image in four formats: VMWare, Hyper-V, VirtualBox (which fully supports Windows 11 starting in version 7, including TPM), and Parallels. If you plan to create a Windows 11 virtual machine using VMWare Player, learn how to add TPM in our dedicated article. Finally, keep in mind that you must have at least 20 GB of disk space to use the VM.
