Surface Duo 2 gets a massive firmware update with new features

This month, Microsoft finally released the long-promised Android 11 upgrade for the original Surface Duo. Apart from updating the operating system to a newer version, the latest firmware for the first-gen Surface Duo contains several new features and improvements. Some of those features are now available on the second-gen Surface Duo, which has just received January 2022 firmware update.

What is new in January 2022 firmware update for Surface Duo 2?

According to release notes you can find on the official Surface Support website, January 2022 firmware update for Surface Duo 2 brings several new features and improvements for the camera, charging, touch responsiveness, and overall system stability.

  • New features: January 2022 firmware update enables pen shortcut preferences in settings for Surface Slim Pen 2. Note that this requires pairing Surface Slim Pen 2 with Surface Duo 2.
  • New features: Surface Duo 2 users can now use Android apps via the Your Phone app on their Windows PCs. You can learn more about linking Surface Duo to a Windows computer here.
  • The update improves camera usability in night mode, 4K video recording, and autofocus.
  • The update improves charging reliability with 3-rd party chargers.
  • The update improves system reliability and stability.
  • The update improves touch responsiveness.
  • The update contains Android security patches for January 2022.

Microsoft says there are no known issues in January 2022 firmware update for Surface Duo 2, but you need to keep in mind that firmware updates on Surface devices are one-way tickets. In other words, you cannot roll back installed updates.
