In a major shift in its communications strategy, Microsoft has officially begun the process of phasing out its long-standing messaging app Skype, starting May 5, 2025. The move marks the end of an era for the iconic platform that once dominated the voice over IP (VoIP) and messaging space. Users will be migrated to Microsoft Teams Free, a more modern and feature-rich platform designed to meet modern communications needs.

Skype, which first launched in 2003 and was acquired by Microsoft in 2011 for $8.5 billion, has seen a steady decline in popularity in recent years as users migrate to competing platforms like Zoom, WhatsApp, and Discord.
The webpage to download Skype has been taken down. The web UI for Skype is now redirects you to Teams.
Seamless transition to Teams Free
Microsoft is ensuring a seamless transition for all Skype users. Contacts and chat history will be automatically migrated to Teams Free, allowing users to keep their data without interruption. In the coming weeks, users will receive in-app notifications that will guide them through the steps to complete the transition.
Message, group chat, and contact history from Skype will automatically migrate to Teams once you sign in to your account. If you don’t want to switch to Teams, you can export photos and conversation history to your computer. The company has also prepared a tool for easily viewing your Skype conversation history.
A Legacy of Innovation
Skype’s path has been marked by groundbreaking innovations in VoIP technology and global communications. From its early days as a pioneer in video calling to its integration into Windows, Xbox, and mobile platforms, Skype has played a key role in shaping modern digital communications. But as consumer preferences evolved, Microsoft struggled to keep Skype competitive with newer platforms that offered more robust features and a seamless user experience.
Recent efforts to revive Skype included removing ads and improving performance on Windows 11. However, these updates were too little, too late. The end of support for services like Skype Number in December 2024 was a signal that the aging platform couldn’t keep up.
For current Skype users, it’s game over. Now is the time to decide whether to switch to Teams or save your data before the service goes offline for good.
