Microsoft is releasing a new version of the Skype Insider Preview app. Skype version 8.42.76.54 is available for all supported platforms.

The new Skype Preview app has a very streamlined user interface. It follows the modern trend of flat minimalist design with glyph icons and no borders anywhere. This design is being used in all other Microsoft products.

New Speaker View for Group Calls in Skype

Version 8.42.76.54 features a new speaker view for group calls. The official announcement describes the feature as follows.

In large group meetings it's often useful to see the person who is currently speaking, big on your screen. In our latest Insider build, we are introducing speaker view for group calls! When you turn on speaker view, the call screen will display the person currently speaking and when someone else starts talking the call screen will automatically switch to follow the action!

On mobile devices you can easily switch between the default grid view and the new speaker view by tapping the view switcher button on the upper right corner.

On desktop, you can access the new speaker view from the menu in the upper right part of the call screen.

  1. I know you’re just reporting the news, but Skype 8 is absolute DOGSHIT.

Skype Classic is still available for download from Major Geeks.

It tries to trick you with a new installation. You are unable to sign in, and it claims it must update.

This is a trick. After rebooting it works fine.

That said Microsoft has indicated that eventually Skype Classic will be unable to sign in.

Hardly surprising since Microsoft is a criminal enterprise that hates its customers, but none the less unfortunate.

  2. At least they made it optional. This Speaker View is forced in other video calling crap like Facebook Portal. I bought it and now I am repenting. They left no option to keep 1 person focused in fullscreen view. It switches constantly if anyone else coughs, types, sips a cup of tea or makes any noise in a group video call.
