A new version of Skype Alpha for Linux was released today by Microsoft. It is a completely redesigned software which has nothing common with the previously available Skype 4.3. The application is in an early development stage and it lacks some basic features like video calling or screen sharing.
The change log for version 1.5 highlights the following improvements and fixes:
- Voice messaging audio now works.
- Mojis now work with audio.
- You can now silence notification sounds and turn off messaging notifications completely in ‘Settings’.
- Disabled the ability to drag & drop a URL into Skype which opens the browser in the application.
- Presence status icon sizes in the Tray have been improved on some distributions.
The new version of Skype for Linux shows a shift from the previously used Qt framework to web technologies. Under the hood of this new version are the Electron platform, Chromium and Node.js.
So, basically this new Skype is just a web version packed into a native GUI app.

- Download and install the appropriate package.
- Open the apps menu and run it from there.
