Settings app replaces Control panel in Win+X menu in Windows 10

In Windows 8, Microsoft introduced a new feature - the Win+X menu which can be opened by pressing Win+X shortcut keys together on the keyboard. In Windows 10, you can simply right click on the Start button to show it. The Win+X menu contains shortcuts to useful administrative tools and system functions. Starting with Windows 10 build 14942, Microsoft is removing classic Control panel applets from the Win + X menu and replacing them with pages from the Settings app.

In Windows 10 build 14942, Microsoft has secretly updated some of the shortcuts to open the appropriate pages of the Settings app.

The following items now refer to the Settings app:

  • Programs and Features
  • Power Options
  • System
  • Network Connections.

Also, the Control panel link has been replaced by Microsoft with the Settings app:

It is still possible to customize Win+X menu items and add classic applets and other applications you want. It is still possible to open and use the Control panel app. However, you cannot ignore the fact that the classic Control Panel will be removed completely in the near future.

  1. It’s one thing for Microsoft to just want to pretend the Control Panel no longer exists; it’s another thing to actually do so without replicating ALL of its functionality within the Settings app, which is currently does not. It’s way too early to deprecate accessibility of the Control Panel within power menus like Win+X, no matter how much Microsoft wishes us to get used to its new method of doing things.

  2. Win+X menu supposed to be made for advanced users. Settings app is restricted comparing to the good ol’ Control Panel but as always Microsoft pretends that they’re listening to user feedback. What a disappointment. I’ll be altering that menu with some kind of 3rd party app.

  3. Very good. Microsoft has to remove the Control Panel soon, he’s terrible on small screens and touch screens. .
