Insider reports reveal that Microsoft and Sony may reconsider their current timelines for next-generation consoles, originally projected for a 2027–2028 release window. The primary factor prompting this reevaluation is a notable increase in RAM prices, driven by heavy global demand for artificial intelligence technologies.

According to industry insider Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming, console manufacturers are actively debating whether to postpone the launch of their next-generation systems. The delay would provide RAM suppliers time to expand production capacity, which could eventually lead to more favorable pricing.
Henderson stated, "From what we understand, the situation has led console manufacturers to debate whether the next generation of consoles should be delayed from their intended 2027–2028 release window, with the hope that RAM manufacturers will be able to build out their infrastructure to produce more RAM, thereby allowing prices to drop."
In addition to potential next-gen delays, Henderson noted that existing hardware, including the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, could see price increases. These adjustments would reflect ongoing supply constraints and escalating component costs.
The price of RAM modules has reportedly risen by several hundred percent over the past few months, a trend attributed to the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure and data centers worldwide.
Next-Gen Launch Could Slip Beyond 2027
Earlier speculation positioned Microsoft to unveil its next console on November 15, 2026, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the original Xbox launch. However, current market conditions may push availability into 2028 or later. Similar considerations likely apply to Sony's roadmap for the PlayStation successor.
Henderson also cautioned that when next-generation consoles do arrive, their launch prices could be significantly higher than previous generations, potentially reaching what he described as "extortionate" levels.
