PowerToys 0.70 released with new Mouse Without Borders and Peek tools

PowerToys 0.70 is available for download, featuring two new tools, Mouse Without Borders and Peek. Mouse Without Borders may be already familiar to many, as  it existed as a standalone project for years. Now it is part of the suite, and allows you to use a single set of keyboard and mouse for managing multiple computers. The other tool, Peek, allows you to quickly preview the select file contents with a key stroke.

Mouse Without Borders

The addition of Mouse Without Borders is great news for users who frequently work with multiple computers. With the ability to interact with other computers from the same keyboard and mouse, users can switch seamlessly between machines without the need for additional input devices. The added functionality of sharing clipboard and files between the machines further enhances productivity by streamlining workflow. The upgrade to .NET 7 and adjustments to fit inside the PowerToys model ensure that the tool is optimized for performance and user experience.

The new Peek PowerToys utility

Peek is a useful utility that provides a quick preview of files selected in File Explorer. With the press of a shortcut (Ctrl+Space by default), users can easily preview files without the need to open them in a separate program. This can save time and increase productivity by allowing users to quickly determine if a file is the one they need, without the need to open and close multiple files. The feature is especially helpful for image and video files, where a quick preview can often provide enough information to make a decision. Overall, Peek is a simple yet effective utility that can save users time and improve their workflow.

Other changes

The highlights in the official changelog include some quality of life improvements for Registry preview, Awake, and Mouse Jump.

The Registry Preview module has got an option to open the Registry Editor (regedit.exe) at a selected key.

Another notable change is the ability to start other PowerToys tools from PowerRun. The release 0.70 finally includes the appropriate plugin.

There are also plenty of various small fixes and improvements here and there.

You can download PowerToys from the Microsoft Store or GitHub. Existing users will receive this update automatically via the built-in update mechanism. Finally, the winget -s msstore powertoys command will install the app suite on your Windows 11 PC.
