Panos Panay is leaving Microsoft after 19 years

After 19 years at Microsoft, Panos Panay has announced his departure from the company via a post on X (formerly Twitter). During his tenure, he oversaw the development of Surface devices and led the creation of client versions of Windows, including Windows 11.

Team,

After nearly 20 years at the company, Panos Panay has decided to leave Microsoft. Panos has had an incredible impact on our products and culture as well as the broader devices ecosystem. Under Panos’ leadership, the team created the iconic Surface brand with loved products. More recently, as the leader of Windows, the team has brought amazing services and experiences to hundreds of millions with Windows 11 on innovative devices including those from our OEM partners. He will be missed, and I am personally very grateful for his many contributions over the years. Please join me in wishing him well.

Panay played a pivotal role in Microsoft's renewed investment in Windows development, which culminated in the release of Windows 11 in 2021. In an internal email to staff, Microsoft Executive Vice President Rajesh Jha confirmed Panay's departure and CEO Satya Nadella expressed his gratitude for Panay's contributions.

“Thank you, Panos, for your impact on our products, culture, company, and industry over the past two decades,” Nadella says in a statement. “I’m grateful for your leadership, support, and all you’ve done for Microsoft and our customers and partners."

The email also revealed a new department within the Windows and Web Experiences division, led by Mikhail Parakhin, tasked with developing a cloud-based operating system to rival Chrome OS.

Microsoft’s consumer marketing head, Yusuf Mehdi, will take over leading the Windows and Surface businesses.

  1. I am sorry, but I have to say this. Panos Panay is an excellent businessman, but a lousy philosopher. And this shortfall underlines Microsoft’s weakness. Money is not everything !!!
