Starting on March 29, 2024, Microsoft will no longer allow users to upload files from a website to the OneDrive cloud service. This feature was introduced in 2021 for testing purposes, providing a convenient way for mobile users to quickly upload files to their OneDrive account without downloading them first to their devices.
While the URL upload option was available, Microsoft found that it was not widely utilized and incurred high maintenance costs. The company stated that this feature did not align with OneDrive's goal of providing seamless file synchronization across devices.
Until the deadline on March 29, 2024, users can continue to upload files from web by URL to OneDrive as usual. However, after this date, new files will no longer be able to be uploaded through this method.
Microsoft also announced the upcoming release of Copilot for OneDrive in early March, set to launch at the end of April. This AI tool will serve as an assistant, helping users to locate, summarize, and extract information from various types of files stored in OneDrive.
The official announcement is here.
