One-click default browser changing in Windows 11 is now available for all users

Microsoft has finally made the option to change the default browser available to everyone. It was directly backported from the upcoming 22H2 release of Windows 11. In the stable branch, it was first introduced with KB5011563 preview patch. Now, it is generally available.

The way the user supposed to set any other web browser by default instead of Microsoft Edge is one of controversial changes in Windows 11. Microsoft "forgot" to include the one-click option in the updated Settings app. This changed resulted in changing a huge number of options if you want Chrome instead of Edge, making you change the browser for each and every file type and protocol.

Set Default Browser In Windows 11 stable

After collecting users' feedback, Microsoft has changed the Settings app, and made the option available to Insiders in the Dev channel. After a brief period of testing, the company found it stable enough for production use.

With KB5011563, the updated user interface of settings has become available to those who install optional preview patches. Month later, with April 2022 Patch Tuesday, the option is available to everyone running the stable release of Windows 11, starting with build 22000.613 (KB5012592).

Interestingly, the change didn't even mention in the official change log. The release notes for the update only lists security fixes.

So, after installing KB5012592 you will have an easier solution for setting the browser of your choice as you default web app. However, the solution is still not perfect. Edge will continue handling some of the file extensions, such as PDFs. You may need to check file associations and manually switch them from Edge to your new browser.

  1. “Set all (types) as default” button should be present on all apps, not just the browser, as was the case in old Control Panel.
