Native RAR support and taskbar button labels are officially coming to Windows 11

Today at Build 2023, Microsoft has announced two long awaited changes coming to Windows 11. First of all, the company has officially confirmed that soon users will be able to group taskbar buttons and enable labels for them. The other announcement is native support for tar, 7-zip, rar, gz and many others archive formats.

The new features should be part of version Windows 11 23H2, scheduled for Fall 2023.

Taskbar button labels

When the app grouping  is disabled, each open window will have its own button on the taskbar. The name of the window will be displayed next to the application icon, making it easier for users to identify and switch between multiple open windows.

You can now quickly identify and access any instance of each app housed in the taskbar with just one click. All instances of the app are ungrouped with labels on the taskbar.

Taskbar Button Labels

Microsoft is working on this feature since November 2022. The recent Dev channel builds already include semi-working implementation of taskbar button labels, but it is force-disabled with no option to enable it for trying.

So, this will change soon. The feature is expected to roll out to Windows 11 Insiders in the coming weeks.

Native RAR support

Microsoft today announced that Windows 11 will soon have native support for archives in popular formats such as RAR, 7z, GZ, TAR, and more. This support will be provided through the use of the libarchive open source project. The head of the Windows + Devices team, Panos Panay, made the announcement, which was welcomed by users as it eliminates the need for third-party software to archive and unpack files in these formats. However, the release date for this feature is currently unknown.
