Mozilla has extended the support of the previously released Firefox 115 ESR for another six months until March 2025. Thus, the support period for Firefox 115 will be not a year as usual, but a year and a half. At the same time, the company will support Firefox 115 in parallel with the new ESR branch Firefox 128.
This will allow Mozilla to provide Windows 7/8/8.1 users with an actual modern browser. The releases will also be available for macOS 10.12, 10.13, and 10.14. Firefox 115 is supposed to be the last release that supports these legacy systems. However, a note by developers mentions that in March, it is possible that support for the Firefox 115 branch may be extended again.
According to Mozilla statistics, 10.5% of Firefox users continue to use Windows 7 and Windows 8, despite Microsoft ending support for these operating systems in January 2020. This is up from 13.7% a year ago and 19.1% two years ago. Google Chrome ended support for Windows 7 and Windows 8 in February 2023, leaving Firefox as the only modern web browser with Windows 7/8 support.
