On March 12, 2024, Microsoft announced that it would discontinue support for Windows 10 Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise version 21H2 on June 11, 2024. After this date, updates and security patches for older versions of the operating system will no longer be provided. Support for the Windows 10 21H2 version for regular users had already ended in June 2023.
Moving forward, Windows 10 will only have one supported version, 22H2, until October 2025. Microsoft is also discontinuing support for previous versions of Windows 11, such as 21H2. Currently, the supported versions of Windows 11 are 22H2 and 23H2, with Windows 11 22H2 for Home and Pro editions scheduled to end support in October 2024.
The end of support means that Microsoft will no longer release critical patches to protect enterprise and educational customers running Windows 10 version 21H2 from vulnerabilities and threats. Users will be encouraged to upgrade to the latest version of Windows 10 or transition to Windows 11 for further assistance.
Starting in April 2024, Microsoft will offer free upgrades to corporate PCs from Windows 10 Pro to Windows 11 for devices not managed by IT departments. Users will be prompted to upgrade after installing security patches, with the option to choose between Windows 11 23H2 or stay on Windows 10. Microsoft strongly recommends upgrading to Windows 11 for the best user experience.
In October 2023, Windows 11 23H2 was released with new features, a modern Explorer, and various software updates. Microsoft plans to automatically update compatible PCs running Windows 11 21H2 and 22H2 to 23H2 as part of the global rollout of the current supported version.
