Microsoft is developing a unified OneNote app for Windows. In coming 12 months, Microsoft plans to merge OneNote (Win32) and OneNote for Windows 10 (UWP) into a single app. As reported in the official blog, the company intends to bring to the classic version of OneNote all the key features that are currently unique to the UWP version of OneNote for Windows 10. In addition, the desktop application will receive an updated design to match the style of Windows 11.
The announcement points that in the second half of 2022, users of "OneNote for Windows 10" will be asked to switch to the full desktop OneNote application. The OneNote team gives the following recommendations to existing OneNote users:
- If you currently use the OneNote app, there is no action to take as you are on the fastest path to new features.
- If you currently use OneNote for Windows 10, there is no action to take today as the OneNote team is working to build features that will help you move over to the OneNote app more easily in the future. Until we have completed that work, you can continue to use OneNote for Windows 10.
- If you plan on newly deploying OneNote to your organization, we recommend deploying the OneNote app.
At the same time, Microsoft does not intend to immediately abandon the UWP version of "OneNote for Windows 10". Company officials say users need to migrate to the OneNote desktop app by October 2025 as support for "OneNote for Windows 10" will end.

Good. The UWP version was dumbed down and horrible. I’m glad to see it go. They should have never attempted to kill the Win32 version. Its resurrection and promotion is a big win for the community.
